President & CEO, Rhode Island Foundation
Neil D. Steinberg is president and chief executive officer of the Rhode Island Foundation. The organization works to address the needs of Rhode Island’s diverse communities through philanthropy, grantmaking, and community leadership. With assets of approximately $1.4 billion, the organization raised $98 million and distributed $76 million in grants in 2021.
Steinberg came to the Rhode Island Foundation in 2008 from Brown University, his alma mater, after serving as vice president of development. For the three decades prior to that, he worked in the banking sector, both for FleetBoston Financial, where he rose to the position of chairman and chief executive officer of Fleet Bank Rhode Island, as well as at investment banking firm DWQ Associates.
Steinberg has served as a director of the Providence Foundation, the Providence Performing Arts Center, and the Urban League. He currently serves on the Rhode Island Commodores Board of Governors, as a Board member of the Partnership for Rhode Island, as a trustee of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the State Innovation Model (SIM) Healthy Rhode Island Steering Committee, and is a trustee of the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council (RIPEC).
In 2021, Steinberg was again named by Providence Business News as one of Rhode Island’s “Most Influential People”. In 2019, Steinberg was inducted into both the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame and the Pawtucket Hall of Fame; named as one of Providence Business News’ 25 Over 55 awardees; and received the Brighter Futures Award from Family Service of Rhode Island.
Steinberg holds an A.B. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, and was inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame in 2007. He lives in Pawtucket, RI with his wife Genie, and has two adult sons, Jason and Eric.
