knowledge in creating a treatment atmosphere that assists in the healing process for all her patients. The goal for Munirat, is to assist people of color in discussing issues related to and regarding mental health and illnesses thereby healing hurting communities, individuals and overall mental wellness.
Munirat is extremely passionate about deconstructing psychological, environmental, social/physical stigmas and notions about mental health and people of color, specifically amongst Nigerian Americans on a local, national and international level. She motivated to disrupt the narrative, break the cycle and redefine help and recently developed an IG “Je’Ka Ranti Ara Wa” focused on changing the narrative for Nigerians and other people of color. She advocates by providing context and information related to etiology of diseases, in addition to avenues for care, treatment and recovery, while simultaneously deconstructing ingrained notions of mental health and illnesses.
Prior to Munirats career as an RN and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, she obtained her BS in Human Development and Master’s with a concentration in Higher Education and Administration from URI. Munirat was employed at institutions of Higher Education including Tulane University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At both institutions, Munirat spent a vast majority of her time actively engaging in social justice work/educations and training for various departments and students, including the development, planning and implementation of the annual Civil Rights Pilgrimage during Spring Break where students traveled through key states of the civil rights movement where students learned from key figures of the movement such as Bernard Lafayette, a freedom rider. While at URI, Munirat worked closely with students, faculty and administrators in the founding of the “Student Leadership Conference” completely funded by the provosts’ office, in response to several instances of bias and hate on campus. As a result of the student leadership conference held at Alton Jones, several demands were made including the need for the role “Vice President of Diversity”, ensuring that we always have a seat at the table. Munirat has always been proud of how open to change URI has been and continues to be; ensuring that all its members have a comprehensive sense of what it means to be fully human, and the rights and responsibilities that humanity includes.
Munirat has served on several community panels and boards including the inaugural CNE Diversity Summit, URI Alumni of Color Panel (and ongoing events), and serves as a mentor to 1st generation students at the Paul Cuffee school in Providence, RI.
