Senator Gayle Goldin was first elected in 2012, and now serves as the Senate Deputy Majority Whip and as Vice Chair of Health and Human Services committee. In her first term in office, Senator Goldin fulfilled a decade-long vision by championing the passage of Temporary Caregiver Insurance, making Rhode Island the third state in the country with paid leave. Since then, she’s pushed for legislation to create automatic voter registration, protect freedom of speech, expand supports for lower-wage earning families, and address pay discrimination and sexual harassment. She has introduced and co-sponsored legislation addressing some of our nation’s most controversial topics, from gun safety to single-payer health care. In 2019, Senator Goldin was instrumental in the passage of Rhode Island’s Reproductive Privacy Act, ensuring that abortion remains safe and legal in our state even if the Supreme Court overturns or erodes the protections of Roe v. Wade.
Senator Goldin also currently serves as the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Campaign Advisor to Family Values @ Work. She previously served as the Strategic Initiatives Officer at the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island. After graduate school at Tufts, she moved to Rhode Island to work at a national organization focused on increasing access to health care for the uninsured. Originally from Montreal, Senator Goldin immigrated to the US as a child, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. She returned to Montreal for her undergraduate degree at McGill University. She has authored several opinion pieces, including “Why Speaking Out Against Sexual Harassment Backfired for Women in Office” (Glamour) and was an invited speaker at the Aspen Institute to discuss the unwritten rules of the patriarchy.
