As executive vice president, chief administrative officer and chief legal officer at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), Michele Lederberg ensures that BCBSRI maintains the highest legal and ethical standards, and that the company meets its corporate social responsibility obligations. Her wide-ranging responsibilities include oversight for the company’s legal affairs; corporate compliance; risk and audit; human resources; community investment; diversity, equity and inclusion; and public affairs. Lederberg serves as secretary of the BCBSRI board of directors, and cultivates the company’s relationships with government, community and business leaders around healthcare policy. She also leads BCBSRI’s health equity initiatives.
Lederberg is active in the community, serving as chair of the board of United Way of Rhode Island, and on the board of directors of the Rhode Island Free Clinic, the Providence Foundation, Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council, and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. She was previously governance chair of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and has also served on the board of the American Red Cross Rhode Island branch. Lederberg co-chairs the Rhode Island Cost Trends Steering Committee established by former Governor Gina Raimondo to address healthcare affordability through sustainable, measurable actions.
Lederberg joined BCBSRI after working as an attorney in private practice focused on healthcare transactions, including corporate legal services for a nonprofit hospital and physician practices. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law and a Master of Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health. Michele earned her bachelor’s degree with honors from Brown University. She is a governance fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors.
